Which scan do you need?
It's the same machine doing two different jobs, and clinics price them separately. Check which one a quoted price covers.
Body composition
A whole-body scan that measures fat, lean muscle and bone, broken down by arm, leg and trunk. Most reports also estimate visceral fat, the fat around your organs. It's the scan people use to track a training plan, fat loss or muscle gain.
Bone density
A scan of the hip and lower spine that measures bone mineral density and gives T-scores and Z-scores. It's used to check for osteopenia and osteoporosis, often after the menopause, a fracture from a minor fall, or long-term steroid use.
What a body composition report shows
- FatHow much fat you carry, in kilograms and as a percentage, split between arms, legs and trunk.
- Lean massMostly muscle. Reports compare your left and right sides, which shows up any imbalance.
- Visceral fatAn estimate of the fat stored around your organs, which bathroom scales can only roughly guess at.
- BoneTotal bone mineral content. A full bone density check is a separate scan of the hip and spine.

What to check before you book
- Which scan the price covers: body composition, bone density or both.
- Whether you can book yourself, or need a referral first.
- Who explains your results. A face-to-face consultation is different from a PDF in your inbox.
- Whether the report includes visceral fat and a breakdown by body region.
- The price of repeat scans, if you plan to track progress.
- That the clinic is registered with the Care Quality Commission. You can search any provider on the CQC website.
Hospitals and the NHS
Private hospitals offer bone density scans, mostly through a consultant or GP referral. They rarely publish self-pay prices, so you'll need to ask for a quote.
The NHS offers bone density scans free when your GP or a specialist refers you and you meet the clinical criteria. Body composition scans for fitness or weight tracking aren't available on the NHS, so those are always self-pay.
Questions people ask
How much does a DEXA scan cost in London?
We checked 6 London providers between 31 October and 1 November 2026, and 5 publish prices. A single DEXA scan in London costs between £115 and £189 at the providers that publish prices. Combined packages covering both scans cost £250 to £295. Body composition prices that include a results consultation are from £180 at Scan.com and £189 at BodyView.
What's the cheapest DEXA scan in London I can book myself?
At a fixed, published price, DEXA London charges £150 for a body composition scan you can book without a referral. Scan.com's London body composition scans start from £180. Oryon Imaging's £115 body composition scan needs a referral. For bone density, Oryon Imaging's £115 scan can be booked without one, the lowest fixed price we found, but self-referral there is only for people who meet Oryon's eligibility criteria and are registered with a UK GP or healthcare practitioner.
Do I need a referral for a DEXA scan?
DEXA uses a small dose of X-rays, so UK rules require a healthcare professional to approve each scan. Most private providers handle this for you with a short questionnaire or a call, so you don't need to see your GP first. Oryon Imaging is the exception for body composition scans: it needs a referral and a clinical reason.
Can I get a DEXA scan on the NHS?
The NHS offers bone density scans free when a GP or specialist refers you and you meet the clinical criteria, for example a fracture after a minor fall or long-term steroid use. Body composition scans for fitness or weight tracking aren't available on the NHS.
How often should I have a DEXA scan?
There's no fixed rule. Some providers discount repeat scans for people tracking a training or weight-loss programme, and some limit how many scans you can have in a year because each one uses a small dose of X-rays. For a fair comparison, rescan on the same machine, at the same time of day, under the same conditions.
Is a DEXA scan safe?
A DEXA scan uses a very low dose of X-rays. You lie on an open table, usually fully clothed, while a scanning arm passes over you. Tell the clinic if you are, or might be, pregnant.
How long does a DEXA scan take?
The scan itself takes a few minutes. Appointments run from about 15 minutes to 40 minutes, depending on whether a results consultation is included.
How we check prices
We check each price against its source, usually the provider's own website, and record the date we checked it. Where a price comes from somewhere else, we mark it. Prices change, so confirm with the clinic before you book.
No provider pays to appear on this page or to be placed higher in the table. If a price is out of date, tell us and we'll update it.
